Bob Burr
Valued Volunteer
15th May 2002

At their annual Club Dinner held on 3rd May, the Chairman of Verwood Rugby Club, Ken Banks was pleased to present Bob Burr with an RFU Volunteer Recognition Award for his contribution to the development of the Club during the Season. Bob joined the Club last year, having moved to Verwood following his retirement. He has provided considerable technical advice to the coaching team by closely analysing every match and he has attended most of the Club’s training sessions. Bob’s grounding in rugby started at school in Aberdeen. An able outside half, he played for Gordonians FP before joining the Royal Air Force where he played at all representative levels. He also played with local clubs nearest to where he was stationed such as Havant, Cambridge, & Sleaford. He later refereed for Bucks County. Bob is particularly proud of his involvement with the High Wycombe Junior Club between 1978 and 1987. When he first became involved it had only one team and Bob was instrumental in building it into a club with one, and sometimes two, teams at each of U-13, U-14,U-15, U-16, and U-17 levels. Bob managed to do this only with the enthusiastic help of a bunch of parent volunteers whom he recruited. Bob’s overseas work took him away from the rugby scene for many years but, in retirement, he now feels he still has a lot to offer the game. Bob said, “I am still keen to put something back into a game which gives me such tremendous enjoyment”.

Recognising the volunteer is high on the RFU’s agenda. Their volunteer initiatives have been re-branded “Running Rugby - Get Involved”. It is fitting that the RFU have recognised Bob’s contribution. Clubs such as Verwood RUFC depend on volunteers and more volunteers are required so that the Clubs such as Verwood can implement their Community Rugby Policies. Ken
Banks, Verwood’s Chairman said, “ We welcome anyone who is prepared to help out in any way at our Club and fully endorse the RFU’s policies on Volunteer Recognition”.
