The Club's History

Founded in 1994, the Club is one of the youngest in the Rugby Football Union. The Club's creation owes much to the efforts of Ken Banks our Chairman, and his son Simon. They have been instrumental in taking the Club forward to becoming full members of the RFU and now playing  in the English League.

Prior to 1994, there was talk of forming a Club for well over a decade. The fulcrum was the desire of some enthusiastic players, already playing for other clubs in the area, who decided that it was time to have one in Verwood.

An inaugural game was organised and played at the Three Legged Cross recreation ground in March 1994, against Portcastrians (now East Dorset RFC), of Bournemouth. The response to that game encouraged an approach to the Verwood Community Association to see if a playing area could be obtained. The field adjacent to the existing soccer pitches at Potterne Park was made available for this purpose. Work was carried out by Club members to bring the field to a suitable standard. Playing equipment, services etc. were, to a great extent, funded by local businessmen. The new Pavilion at Potterne Park now offers excellent changing facilities (seen below).

Rugby in Verwood is taking a hold. The Club now has a high profile in the local community. As a result of some very generous sponsorship, particularly in the past from John Collins of JC's Wine and Video and the continuing generosity of Mike Horne of M.A. Horne Limited, the Club has a sound financial base.

We are grateful to the Royal British Legion for permiiting us to use their Club to entertain our visitors until season 2006/7. From September 2006, the Verwood Community Association (VCA) have established a bar in the Pavilion at Potterne Park so as to establish Potterne Park as the Club's base for the foseeable future.

Rugby in Verwood can only go forward and our target must be to improve our standard, attract new players, obtain promotion through the Leagues, and have fun!

The Web Site

This was founded on 22nd July 1998 and was quite an early site so far as Rugby Clubs are concerned. We are hosted by freeservers.com , an American site which is not to confused with freeserve in the UK. As from 1st January 2000, the Club has obtained its own Domain and can be found at:

We continue to be grateful to Freeservers for hosting our web site at such a modest charge.
