IT HAS HAD A RICH AND SOMETIMES TURBULENT HISTORY AND REMAINS ONE OF THE GREAT FESTIVALS OF SPORT. .
England and Scotland played rugby's first international match in 1871. Ireland met England four years later and took on Scotland for the first time in 1877.
Wales entered the lists against England in 1881, played Ireland in 1882 and Scotland in 1883, but it was not until 1884 that all four of the Home Unions first managed to play each other in the same season.
France began playing England in 1906. Wales and Ireland staged their inaugural matches with them in 1908 and 1909 respectively and Scotland completed the Five Nations jigsaw in 1910. Italy made it a Six Nations tournament in 2000.
