Summer Academy
The morning of Sunday 28th July saw the final week of the Summer Academy
which finished with a round robin tournament of Tag Rugby. There was even
the opportunity for the mums and Dads to have a go - all who took part
thoroughly enjoyed it!. Our particular thanks go to Dany Johnson for all
his help and assistance on the coaching side. Unfortunately, he is unable
to attend the last session., but he says:
"Sorry I'm not on 28 Jul 02, due to the fact there is a coach's
society day which has been re-arranged from June for also tomorrow.
I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on a well
organised and structured academy over the last six weekends, its the
way forward so keep up the excellent work. I would like to thank the players
and members of Verwood Rugby Club for
the hospitality & welcome they gave to me, if you could please
pass that on. If there is anything I can assist with in the future please
do not hesitate to get in touch.
GOOD LUCK FOR THE COMING SEASON!
Regards Dany Johnson"

Wot no in Goal Area?
The Club has decided on its tactics for the forthcoming season. As
a special dispensation from the RFU, the Club has been allowed to play
one way this season due to Wessex Water undertaking major drainage works
at Potterne Park. How many points is this worth? Is this a record for the
shortest ever in-goal area?
The work will hopefully be complete by the end of September. However, all the Club's Matches will be away in September to accommodate these works.

Fitness Training
Our thanks to Robbie Burr for running his excellent fitness sessions
at Potterne on Friday 12th & 19th July. Training now reverts to its
normal Thursday night slot at 7.30pm. The first Thursday session will involve
a series of fitness tests including the dreaded "bleep test".

Pre-Season Training
Bob Burr has managed to enlist the services of his nephew, Robbie Burr,
a professional Fitness trainer who hasworked with the Brisbane Broncos,
a Super 12 Club. He will take us through the first two
pre-season sessions on Friday 12th July and Friday 19th
July @ 7.30pm. Following this, (back to
Thursdays) at the session on 25th July there will be fitness tests.
The purpose is to gauge each
individual’s fitness so that a benchmark can be obtained to measure
improved fitness over the
months ahead. These simple tests will be repeated probably at 4 weekly
intervals.
The first coaching sessions will commence on 15th August. The Club's
coaching team have decided to map the season ahead so that everyone can
see what the purpose is of each session is and can prepare accordingly.
If any playing member has not had a copy of this document please contact
any member of the committee.

It is fitting that the last day of the month saw another good turnout
for the second week of the Summer Acedemy. 30+ youngsters turned out. It
was particularly pleasing to see so many parents and grandparents staying
to watch the session.
The second phase of the Club's Youth Development programme commenced
on Sunday 23rd June with the start of the Club's Summer Academy for 8-12
year olds. This will run for six weeks on Sunday mornings at Potterne Park.
The Academy organiser is the Club's Community Rugby officer, Dave Hockaday.
He said: " I was pleased with the turnout with 36 enthusiastic youngsters
attending the session. This builds on the success of our Hillside First
School initiative"

The Nick Carlyon Memorial Match - Saturday 27th April
Verwood Past 41 Verwood Present 22
This last game of the season was a fitting tribute the to the late Nick Carlyon who died last year. He was a young man and a friend to all at Verwood RUFC. As a founder member of our Club, he played in the front row and later in the backs at centre. His happy and generous disposition was always apparent. Sadly, he took his own life.
A total of ten tries were scored in what was a very open game of rugby played in good spirit. See Match Report & Pictures
All proceeds from today’s game will be passed to the Wooden Spoon Society, a rugby charity which helps under privileged children.
Scorers:

Dan Johnson;Tim Wynn; John
Penalty - George Leyland

Verwood RUFC have been piloting After School Tag Rugby at Hillside First School, Verwood, over the last two weeks. So far the sessions have gone very well with 30 very enthusiasic youngsters taking part. The Club will run this for the next four weeks to assess the interest in establishing a mini section at the youngest age group for Season 2002/3.
This is how Division 2 finished. It is not yet known who will be relegated as there has been talk of re-structuring the League so that Four may enter Division 3.

Verwood took delivery of their "changed" strip on Saturday 16th March which was worn against Chineham. See Team Picture below
To everyone's great disappointment, Verwood lost away to Chineham in
Hampshire Division 3 17- 6 on Saturday 16th March. Verwood controlled the
game in the first half and led 6-3 at half-time through two well struck
penalties from full-back Phil Emery, with Chineham's Steve Knight adding
a penalty just before the break. Two opportunist tries by Andy Bloodsworth
and Richard Avenell (both converted) allowed Chineham to take a commanding
lead following which Verwood were always on the back foot.
